2024 FTPN Session III: Microtransit 101
Microtransit is a flexible, tech-enabled form of shared transportation that fills a unique niche between ride hailing and traditional fixed-route transit. Apps and real-time information provide on-demand, user-friendly options for passengers, while nimble routes, dynamic schedules, and a range of vehicle sizes enable microtransit to continuously adapt to rider demand. This service approach affords a level of flexibility and efficiency that provides transit agencies with the opportunity to expand the reach of the transit network. Not surprisingly, microtransit has generated a high level of interest across all types of transit agencies. To help agencies make informed decisions, this session will begin with a primer on what microtransit is, its various configurations, where it makes sense, and how it can be customized to meet the needs and goals of the local community. This overview will set the stage for several Florida agencies who will share the benefits, challenges, and lessons learned from their own unique microtransit implementations.
